PVB Interlayer
Polyvinyl butyral, the most common interlayer material in laminated glass, providing safety retention, UV blocking, and sound dampening properties.
Technical Details
PVB is a resin-based polymer film typically 0.030" (0.76mm) thick, though multiple layers can be used for enhanced performance. Standard PVB blocks 99% of UV radiation and provides moderate acoustic insulation (STC improvement of 2-4 points over monolithic glass). PVB interlayers become soft at elevated temperatures and rely on the autoclave lamination process for proper bonding.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PVB and SGP interlayers?
PVB is the standard interlayer offering good safety retention and UV blocking. SGP (SentryGlas Plus) is approximately 100 times stiffer and 5 times stronger than PVB, making it the choice for hurricane-rated, structural, and post-breakage load-bearing applications.
