How to Measure for a Glass Fence Installation

How to measure for a glass fence: linear footage, corners, gates, transitions, and tips for accurate quoting and fabrication.

⏱ 45 min ⚙ Intermediate 8 Steps

Accurate measurements are critical for glass fencing projects because every panel is custom-fabricated to your exact dimensions. Unlike wood fencing that can be trimmed on-site, tempered glass must be cut before the tempering process and cannot be modified afterward. Getting measurements right the first time prevents costly re-fabrication delays. This guide shows you how to measure like a professional.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Create a sketch of the installation area

Before measuring, draw a rough overhead sketch of your installation area showing all walls, edges, corners, openings, and any obstacles. Include the location of gates, steps, transitions between surfaces, and any existing structures (posts, walls, ledges) that the glass system will connect to. This sketch will serve as your measurement reference map.

2

Measure total linear footage

Measure the total length of each straight run where glass panels will be installed. Measure along the surface where the glass system will be mounted (top of wall, deck edge, floor surface). For curved areas, measure the chord (straight line) and the arc depth, then note it as a curve on your sketch. Record each segment individually with a label on your sketch.

3

Measure heights at multiple points

Measure the height from the mounting surface to the required top-of-glass height at both ends and the middle of each run. If the mounting surface is not level (common on decks and hillside installations), take height measurements every 4-6 feet. Note any slope direction and degree. Glass panels can be cut to follow a slope (rake-cut) but this must be specified during fabrication.

4

Document corners and angles

At each corner, measure and record the angle. Use a digital angle finder for accuracy. Standard corners are 90 degrees, but many installations have non-standard angles (135-degree deck corners, angled stairways). Note whether each corner is an inside corner (concave) or outside corner (convex), as hardware differs for each. Photograph each corner with your angle measurement visible.

5

Identify gate locations and openings

Mark the exact location and width of each gate opening. Standard pool barrier gates are 36-48 inches wide. Note the swing direction (left/right, inward/outward) and any constraints (walls, landscaping, furniture) that affect swing direction. If the gate is part of a pool barrier, it must be self-closing and self-latching per code.

6

Check mounting surface conditions

Inspect and document the surface where the glass system will be mounted. For top-mount: measure the wall/cap width and note the material (concrete, stone, wood, steel). For fascia-mount: measure the fascia height and depth, and note the material and backing structure. For floor-mount: note the surface material and thickness. Take close-up photos of each mounting condition.

7

Note obstructions and utilities

Identify anything that could interfere with installation: electrical outlets, plumbing lines, HVAC equipment, irrigation heads, lighting fixtures, and downspouts. Measure their exact location relative to your sketch. These may require panel modifications (notches, holes - which must be done pre-tempering) or routing adjustments.

8

Compile and submit measurements

Organize your measurements with the sketch, photos of all conditions, and notes about special requirements. Include your property address, contact information, and project timeline. Submit this package to your glass system provider for accurate quoting. INFINITYGLASS offers free on-site measurement verification for all projects before fabrication begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Glass panel fabrication tolerances are typically +/- 1/16 inch. Your field measurements should be accurate to within 1/4 inch, which is achievable with a standard tape measure. INFINITYGLASS performs on-site verification measurements before fabrication to ensure accuracy, so your initial measurements are primarily for quoting purposes.

Can glass panels be trimmed on site like wood?

No. Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or modified after the tempering process - any attempt will cause the panel to shatter. All panel dimensions, hole locations, and notches must be specified before fabrication. This is why accurate measurements and professional verification are essential.

How do I measure for stairs or slopes?

For stair-mounted railings, measure the total run (horizontal distance), total rise (vertical distance), and the tread/riser dimensions. Glass panels can be fabricated with angled (rake) cuts to follow the stair slope. Measure and note the angle of the slope. For hillside installations, take height measurements every 4-6 feet along the run to map the terrain.
